“Elvis’s recordings first were played on radio station WHBQ. Elvis hid
in a theater because he was afraid people would laugh at him…But the record
sold 7,000 copies in Memphis that first week.” In truth, “he was a self-aware
artist who worked hard at building up a style, rehearsing a recording and
creating a performance technique” (The
Elvis Reader). His 1954-1955 Sun sessions are listed on the National
Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
