“The song was one of the very earliest Lennon-McCartney compositions, written when John was still attending art college and Paul the Liverpool Institute…The two budding songwriters had skipped school one day and repaired to Paul’s house to work on the song, recalled McCartney. ‘I remember I had the lyrics “just 17, never been a beauty queen”—which John, it was one of the first times he ever went, What?
