The notes and words
of R&R begin with the Blues. One of the most influential singers was the Empress of
the Blues, Bessie Smith, whose “success represented a triumph over white
domination in the entertainment business” (The Big Book of Blues). Listed on the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
