Together with the Mills
Brothers, the Golden Gate Quartet (formed in 1930) introduced jazz harmonies,
rhythms, and improvisations into vocal music. Eleanor Roosevelt scheduled them
for her husband’s inaugural gala in 1941 (Encyclopedia of American Gospel
Music). The founding members were students at Booker T. Washington College:
William Langford (1910-1969), Henry Owens, Willie Johnson, and Orlandus Wilson. Their 1938 recording of “John the Revelator” is listed on the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
